Any fun facts, interesting stories, unexpected visitors? Jilly’s Music Room is located in a 1910 building built by the Burkhardt Brewing family as a neighborhood tavern. In the early 1900s, beer was only available for purchase at the breweries. To expand their business and make their brews more accessible, the Burkhardt’s built several neighborhood pubs. It has always been a bar. During prohibition, they made and sold root beer on the ground floor and operated a speakeasy in the basement. There are tiny “sleeping rooms” on the second floor that housed both itinerant rubber workers and Akron’s longest running brothel over the years. We have three mischievous ghosts who keep us on our toes. 18. What are the 3 greatest things about your Neighborhood? Jilly’s Music Room is located in the Northside (arts & entertainment) District at the northern edge of Downtown Akron. We’re home to great restaurants, galleries, shops, outdoor markets, and people. We’re within walking distance of Downtown proper, the Towpath Trail, and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park System. The three greatest things about the neighborhood are our diversity, sense of community, and the camaraderie among business owners. 19. How has your Neighborhood changed in the last 10 years? We’ve been growing to include spaces for people to live and stay, in addition to eat, shop and have fun. A new hotel, lofts, and townhomes are now a part of our landscape. 20. For someone who has never been to your Neighborhood, what would you recommend a visitor do first (aside from stopping into your business)? Take a stroll around … visit our unique shops and galleries. Take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. 21. Tell us about some of your neighbors, specifically the independently owned businesses around your business. Which business was here first and when? Our next-door neighbor, Luigi’s Restaurant, has been here longer than anyone – 75 years. People line-up to try their pizza. Good stuff. DBA (Dante Boccuzzi Akron) is across the street serving up creative American cuisine in a sophisticated environment. They also have one of the best outdoor spaces in the city.
